Blue Schools India (BSI) is the national hub of the Blue Schools Global Network, an international initiative aligned with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
Blue Schools India is coordinated by the Jane Goodall Institute India.
The program recognizes India’s unique position as a coastal nation with rich marine biodiversity, a thriving blue economy, and deep cultural connections to water. By fostering ocean literacy and climate action through education, BSI connects educators, young people, and communities across India to empower individuals as stewards of our oceans, freshwater systems, and climate.
This work aligns with India’s priorities under the UNESCO-led Education for Sustainable Development and Greening Education Partnership initiatives. It also resonates with India’s rich heritage of ecological wisdom, reflecting the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”—the world is one family.
The interconnectedness of people, planet, and purpose forms the foundation of the Blue Schools India framework. By embracing India’s ancient wisdom, indigenous traditions, and modern science, this framework emphasizes the deep relationship between human well-being and the health of the ocean, rivers, and climate. This holistic perspective nurtures a generation of informed, engaged, and responsible citizens who are ready to address challenges at the local, national, and global levels.
To build a network of engaged teachers and young people across India who inspire and empower communities to become stewards of the ocean, freshwater systems, and climate, driving positive change through knowledge, action, and collaboration.
To cultivate an interdisciplinary, context-specific learning environment that integrates ocean and climate education with India’s local realities, encourages critical thinking, and prepares young people to lead with informed compassion and action.
